Jobs in disaster management and homeland security are among the fastest growing in the nation. In our post 9/11 and Katrina era, individuals able to provide strong leadership in these rapidly growing, but still emerging sectors are needed by governmental agencies and the private sector. The U.S. Department of Labor is predicting that the employment of security management personnel will grow faster than all other occupations. As never before, concerns of threats to people and property demonstrate the need for qualified professionals in the areas of disaster management and homeland security.
Cal Poly Continuing Education in partnership with the California Emergency Management Agency, is launching a portfolio of courses in disaster management and homeland security. The courses offered are designed for professionals working in the areas of public safety, security management, and law enforcement as well as corporate executives responsible for security programs, information and communications personnel, fire protection and law enforcement professionals, and those seeking to enter into the field of disaster management and homeland security.
The portfolio includes seven courses offered through through the California Specialized Training Institute. Coursework may also fill requirements associated with National Fire Protection Association Standard on Disaster/Emergency Management and Business Continuity Programs (1600), Certified Emergency Manager, and other professional association certifications. Course Credit
You can earn academic credit for these selected courses offered by the California Specialized Training Institute (CSTI). Earning academic credit in these courses not only prepares you for leadership positions in these growing fields, but also can help you complete an undergraduate degree or graduate degree. The courses are considered elective and residential credit and can count toward the Bachelor of Arts or a master’s degree in Public Policy at Cal Poly You can also use the credit for other professional development requirements, including degree programs at other campuses of the California State University.
There is a two step registration process for these courses.
1.You must register for a class through CSTI. For the CSTI class schedule and details along with online registration through CSTI, visit: www.oes.ca.gov/csti
2. You must also register for academic credit with Cal Poly Continuing Education and pay for the appropriate course BEFORE you start your class at CSTI. Retroactive credit is not available. See the CSTI course list here and online registration for academic credit.
