Introduction to Fly FishingThis course is designed for beginners to learn fly fishing, with no experience required. Through slides, demos, and hands-on exercises, participants will learn about fly fishing equipment and techniques for streams, lakes and ponds. Students will learn some basic aquatic entomology, how to “read” water that holds fish, a bit of game fish identification and biology, and basic fly casting techniques, on grass and on a local farm pond. Instructor Dr. Mark Shelton has been a fisherman since the age of 5, and fly-fishing since his early teens. He has fly-fished on the rivers and lakes of the central valley of California and in Sierra Nevada streams and back country lakes for more than 35 years. Dr. Shelton is an entomologist (insect biologist) who has taught at Cal Poly since 1982. He currently serves as Associate Dean in the College of Agriculture. NCR 9405
