The purpose of this summer elective course is to expose participants to the broader physical, economic, social and cultural planning issues faced in a case study developing country (Ghana). The course will cover topics on Infrastructure Planning and Deployment. It will involve both seminars and field visits and draw dichotomies between: a) traditional (organic) communities; b) contemporary (modernizing) communities and c) planned communites.
Lecture Topics
- Institutional context within which planning is done
- Community types
- Planning in traditional communities
- The role of planning in contemporary communities
- Infrastructure development - issues, problems and successes (circulation networks, electric production and distribution, water supply and distribution and water, and waste disposal and sewer systems)
- Planning for physical, economic and social development
Highlights
- Guest lectures from the director of planning and Chief Executive of the host city
- Visits to major landmarks in the capital city of Accra, historical sites such as the Cape Coast Castle, planned harbor city of Tema, Akosombo hydroelectric dam and one of the world's largest mand-made lakes, and traditional villages
- Field visits within the provincal capital of Ho, the host city

- Weekend visits to attractions (waterfalls, game reserves, cultural events)
Cost:
$4,995 includes all program costs (miscellaneous personal expenses not included)
