Summer 2012: TBA

Students

An intensive 6-week combination of excavations and laboratory analy- sis of historical archaeological materials from the northern yard of the Spanish presidio of Santa Barbara. The presidio was founded in 1782, the last of four military posts in Spanish California intended to defend the province from foreign invasion. Attention will be focused on ar- chitectural remains which may provide information for future recon- struction.

The presidio is located in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara. Students should expect cool foggy nights and warm sunny after- noons while in an ideal climate. The class can be accommodated at no charge at a group campside at El Capitan State Beach, where hot showers and electricity are available. Sleeping bags must be provided by the students, who are also responsible for their own food. Other arrangements may be made. Students should be in good physical condition. Tetanus shots are required.
