Welcome to the Cal Poly Mexico Study Program. The program offers a variety of courses. Students will earn 8 quarter units of academic credit: 4 units in Spanish taught by the host institution -- OLÉ Center for Spanish Language and Culture and 4 units studying Mexican and Latin American life and culture. Students select HUM 310, "Culture of Mexico" or ECON 303, "Economics of Poverty and Discrimination." Courses include guest speakers, field trips, walking tours and field assignments.

Students will study in the city of Querétaro. OLÉ is located in the heart of the historical downtown of the beautiful colonial city of Querétaro, just 20 minutes away from the International Airport of Querétaro and one of the safest and cleanest cities in the country. Students will be enrolled in 8 units of Cal Poly Credit. There are direct flights from Los Angeles International airport to Queretaro International Airport. If students choose to fly to Mexico City there is an additional charge of $40.00 to transport student from that airport. The ride from Mexico City to Queretaro is a 3 hour bus ride. The location of the school has been selected to allow students to be within walking distance of the historical, artistic and recreational attractions of the city.

The colonial architecture of the location has two patios 13 classrooms, library and internet area, 2 living rooms, BBQ area, ping pong and a small basketball facility. The Mexican kitchen area and cafeteria provides our students with a pleasant and family atmosphere where you can study Spanish and immerse yourself in the culture.

We understand the importance of offering quality programs and attention; the staff at OLÉ is committed to giving excellent and timely service. Our students at OLÉ will live and unforgettable experience in a family atmosphere. In additional to the field trips and walking tours the program offers Cal Poly students cultural classes and activities in the afternoons for an additional price: Mexican cooking, Mexican history and literature, visits to markets, museums, city tours,salsa classes and more. OLÉ also offers students private tutoring sessions for an additional fee.

PROGRAM FEE:
The program fee of $2,595 includes Cal Poly tuition, Mexico host institutional fees, room and all meals for four weeks with a host family and two field trips. Students are responsible for their own transportation to Querétaro International Airport after the program ends.

 Students should plan to arrive on Saturday, June 21, 2008; by 5:00 pm. Transportation from Querétaro International Airport to OLÉ will be provided for those students that arrive at the designated meeting time. If students miss their flights or they are delayed students are responsible for their own transportation to the school or host families address. The address and phone numbers will be provided to students prior to departure.

 This fee does not include passport, airfare, textbooks, personal expenses, museum fees and travel arrangements to return to the USA upon the program’s completion.

 INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS:
There will be informational meetings for students in January, February and March 2008.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Students from all majors and class levels with a minimum GPA of at least 2.0 are eligible for the program. The Mexico Studies Program is also open to members of the community and students from other schools are welcome to participate. Students not from Cal Poly need to check with their school to confirm how the units will transfer to their institutions. Students must be at least 18 years of age.

Space is limited. Qualifying students will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis. No prior knowledge of Spanish is required for the SPAN 101 class. Other Spanish classes offered are SPAN 101, 102, 103, 121, 122, and 124. Please see Cal Poly’s catalog for the Spanish pre-requisites.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:
Passports are required for students traveling to Mexico. It is the student’s responsibility to have their passports prior to departing to Mexico. Students are required to attend a mandatory student meeting prior to departure. If the student cannot attend the scheduled mandatory meeting it is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements to go over the student handbook with the resident director.

 Students are required to submit with their application, 2 photos (1 X 1), deposit and course selection. Prior to departure students must submit their flight information, signed acknowledgement of reading the student handbook, Ole assessment exam and a copy of their passport.

Humanities in World Cultures
(HUM 310) (GE C4) -- 4 units
Interdisciplinary examination of the humanities in a selected culture. Special focus on the arts literature, philosophy and language in that culture.

Economics of Poverty, Discrimination and Immigration --CLASS CLOSED
(ECON 303) (GE D5 USCP) -- 4 units --
Economic analysis of the cause, extent and impact of poverty, discrimination and immigration and of the policies designed to address these socioeconomic issues. Emphasis on the experience of African Americans, Latinos and women in the United States.
